Arisaka Type 38 and 99

(6.5x50, 7.7x58)

The Type 99 (1939) in 7.7x58 is basically the same rifle as the Type 38 (1905) in 6.5x50 but for its different cartridge.

This Japanese rifle is an M98 derivative with a very strong action well suited for rebarreling. A true story illustrates this well: Some guy sells his .30-06 Arisaka to a gun shop because it kicked too hard. Upon closer examination, somebody noticed that it had merely been rechambered from its 6.5x50 – a .264. (The guilty"gunsmith" no doubt assumed that it was a Type 99 in 7.7mm/.311, thus able to take a .308 caliber bullet.) Sending a .308 bullet down a .264 bore sort of explains the stout recoil, but it never bothered the Arisaka. That's strong! If an Arisaka done right drops into your hands in the right chambering at the right price, then consider taking it home.
